A 9-year-old Warsaw girl tripped and fell into a moving SUV Wednesday afternoon, leaving her with minor injuries. The accident occurred at 3:51 p.m. Wednesday at South Union Street, Warsaw, 500 feet south of Goodman Street. According to a Warsaw Police Dept. report, Joan K Brown, 52, of 124 Lakeland Drive, Warsaw, was driving her SUV southbound on Union Street and could see pedestrian Kayla Bird, 9, South Columbia Street, Warsaw, walking toward her on the sidewalk on the right hand (west side) of Union Street. Brown said that just as she was getting to the area, Bird moved as if she was going to run across the street. Brown said she did not have time to react and Bird ran into the side of her vehicle, and the passenger side outside rearview mirror hit Bird in the head and face. According to the report, Brown said she stopped, got out, and ran over to Bird to make sure she was OK. Brown said she did not have a cell phone and asked a passerby to call police. Bird said she was walking northbound on the sidewalk along Union Street and that she tripped over her shoelace, which caused her to fall toward the roadway into the side of Brown’s vehicle. Bird said the vehicle struck her in the face and head just to the right and slightly below her right eye. Bird said she fell to the ground, which caused several scrapes on her right shin and left arm near the elbow. Bird also was missing a shoe when the officer arrived. When she was asked why she was missing her shoe, she said it came off when she got hit. Bird’s mother said she did not witness the accident, but was called to the scene by an individual who knew she was Bird’s mother. When medics arrived, Bird’s mother signed off on medical care and said she would take her daughter to the hospital herself. Damage was estimated at less than $750.
