Survey Says

Editor, Times-Union:

How many have filled out and mailed your "American Community Survey"?

It took me a considerable amount of time and effort to do the redundant "survey." And I am only a one-person household with limited income. Fortunately, I could put my fingers on the income tax papers.

On the inside flap of the "Guide" it headlines: "Your Answers Are Confidential And Required By Law."

"The law, Title 13, Sections 141,193 and 221 of the U. S. Code, authorizing the American Community Survey, also provides that your answers are confidential. No one except Census Bureau employees may see your completed form and they can be fined and imprisoned for any disclosure of your answers."

It continues:

"The same law that protects the confidentiality of your answers requires that you provide the information asked in this survey to the best of your knowledge."

In my opinion, here's some sure bets:

l. A high percentage of these surveys will never be filled out and returned.

2. Those who are conscientious may even hire their accounts to complete it!

My bottom line question is: What possible benefit can this limited information provide that they (the government) don't already have in their data bases because some will be very reluctant to avoid honest answers to numbers living in the household, income sources, etc.?
