Editor, Times-Union:
As we are almost done with the legislative session this year, I wanted to do a follow-up on a piece I wrote earlier this session regarding State Representative Curt Nisly.
I work in Indy politics, and I certainly do have the opportunity to be around a lot of state legislators, but I choose to associate myself with Nisly. Sometimes it feels so easy to lose yourself in politics, to forget the principles that you hold near and dear. Nisly has always encouraged me to stay true to who I am.
I have met with Nisly several times this year. I believe this speaks to his character, when I get so much time to just ask him questions and really just listen to the experience he brings to the table. I have never taken a moment of his for granted. In politics, and as we experienced this last year alone in Indiana, anyone can have a title one day, and the next day not have that title for one reason or another. But I know as my path continues in politics, Nisly will always be a mentor and a friend to me.
I am so grateful for every single conversation he has had with me. He never had to reply to any of my messages, or even meet with me. Nisly saw something in me, and for that I will remain ever grateful. Sometimes all it takes, in a child's life, is for one adult to see something in them, for the child to know that they do have potential to reach for their dreams.
For me, that adult came in form of a state legislator: Curt Nisly. As we reach, primary season, please keep this in mind as he is the one breath of fresh air in the Indy bubble, and I know I am not the only person he has had a significant impact on.
