'Superior Species' a classic science fiction formula

Posted

The invading aliens and their ultimate goals are truly horrific, a prerequisite of any satisfying science fiction novel.

Referring to themselves as a "superior species," the creatures are bent on destroying intelligent life on aquatic worlds to meet their own ends.

Seeding targeted planets with a viral infection, they return a couple of generations later to destroy sentient beings.

The humans characters are, well, human, each with their own strengths, weaknesses and revelations.

"Superior Species, Evolution Defies God's Design," by Pierceton native Tony Phillips, is Christian science fiction, exploring the conflicts between evolution and creation.

The heroine, Marsha Peters, is a biology professor with a full plate of personal issues. Her sister and nephew are HIV positive. Her mentor, Dr. James Haddock, has tuned out his profession and tuned into the Internet, trying to balance his formidable scientific training and his religious convictions.

Reconciliation between the two seemingly opposite positions comes through the idea of "intelligent design."

Studies of DNA led to organized, traceable symbols and patterns. The more scientists learn about the building blocks of life, the more it seems that a master code writer - God - had a hand in beginning life.

Phillips presents his story about Intelligent design against a backdrop of provable data, personal struggles and high adventure.

A research mission to the Pacific Rim, and "help from above," leads the Peters-Haddock team to a fascinating find. The discovery unveils the evil intentions of the marauding aliens, how they've seeded the plant with AIDS and, ultimately, leads to the defeat of the Superior Species. In the end, faith in God saves the Earth's human population.
