Sunday Fire Damages 3 Units In A Fourplex At Grace VillageWINONA LAKE - Two of the units in a fourplex on Camelot Drive in Robin Hood addition, Winona Lake, are now unliveable because of a Sunday fire, with a third unit possibly damaged by smoke.
Winona Lake Fire Department Public Information Officer Mike Cox said they were called out to 1405 and 1407 Camelot Drive, Winona Lake, at approximately 1 p.m. The 1405 and 1407 units are the two middle units in the fourplex. The 1409 unit is vacant now but probably has smoke damage but no fire damage, he said. The other unit, 1403, was likely spared because the wind was coming out of the southwest and kept the flames away from the unit. The 1407 unit looks to have sustained the most damage, but Cox said the fire likely started in 1405.
“There was extensive damage to units 1405 and 1407, with the roof between the two having collapsed,” he said.
The cause of the fire and the origin remain under investigation as of Sunday evening.
Two residents were living in 1405 and one was living in 1407. Cox said he was working with the residents to make sure they all had a place to go. Both units were “nonliveable” he said.
He said he didn’t receive any reports of any injuries. Lutheran EMS was on hand.
Cox said the fire was under control at approximately 1:44 p.m., although Winona Lake Fire was still at the scene at 4 p.m. due to searching for hot spots.
County records indicate the property is owned by National Fellowship of Brethren Retirement Homes, 337 Grace Village Drive, Winona Lake.
Along with Winona Lake, responding departments included Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, Pierceton, Claypool North Webster and Leesburg/Plain Township. Traffic control was handled by Winona Lake police.
