SAN DIEGO, Calif. – More than 150 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members, advisers, alumni and guests from around Indiana gathered in San Diego, Calif., at the San Diego Convention Center, June 29-July 3 for the FCCLA National Leadership Conference.

The students represented 19 schools from Indiana. The National Leadership Conference had an attendance of over 7,000. The theme of this year’s conference was “Make It Count,” which inspired attendees to share how they make it count while exploring career opportunities, developing leadership skills and growing personally while making a difference in their families and communities, according to a news release from Indiana Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

FCCLA is a national organization that works with students in Family and Consumer Sciences and is described as the Ultimate Leadership Experience. Throughout the conference, members attended sessions focused on leadership and career development in CTE pathways. Indiana students competed in skill and knowledge demonstrations, called STAR Events, related to their studies in the field of Family and Consumer Sciences. To participate at the National Leadership Conference, a student had to place in the top two at the state leadership conference. Indiana had 70 STAR event competitors and these students were awarded 23 gold medals, 40 silver medals and 10 bronze medals.

Indiana had nine students place in the top three nationally and 20 students place in the top 10 nationally for the events. Local top three finishers included Aby Herman, Warsaw Community High School, sports nutrition; and Grace Bishop and Hailey Booher, WCHS, sustainability challenge.

“We are thrilled to have an attendance of over 7,000 members, advisers, corporate partners and guests who are committed to discovering the unlimited possibilities available through FCCLA. The relationships and skills developed during this conference have inspired students to make a difference in their own communities and to make every moment count,” said Sandy Spavone, executive director of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with family as its central focus, stated the release. Participation in national events, state programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers and communities.
