Stutzman Urges Fiscal Conservancy; Return To The Constitutional ValuesIn its continuing lecture series, the Saint Regis Club hosted Republican congressional candidate Marlin Stuzman.

Stutzman (R-Howe) is a state senator seeking the open House of Representatives seat vacated by Mark Souder in March.

Stutzman will take on Dr. Tom Hayhurst (D-Fort Wayne) in both a special election and general election Nov. 2.

After an informal meet-and-greet, Stutzman spent about 25 minutes talking about his background and political viewpoints.

Stutzman said it was important to be fiscally conservative and to get back to the constitution.

During a question-and-answer session, Stutzman was asked how he would cut spending in Washington.

Stutzman said the best way to eliminate wasteful government programs is to cut funding to the them.

"We're practically bankrupt," said Stuzman. "We're putting ourselves in that position. We've got to look out for America first."

Stutzman also reiterated his view that government can't solve every problem.

"Our federal government didn't give us the best healthcare in the world," said Stutzman. "Government didn't give us a place like Warsaw with the orthopedic industry. The answers are local."

Stutzman also said he was a proponent of making the Congress part-time.

"I don't see politics as a career," said Stutzman. "I see it as public service."

Stutzman said a part-time Congress would force politicians to spend more time in their home district rather than staying in Washington.

Stutzman said he is in favor of keeping the Bush tax cuts as well as returning the rest of the unused federal stimulus money back to the general operating fund.

One person asked if the government was beyond repair.

"I don't think the system is broken," said Stutzman. "Government is not the answer. These people have hijacked our government. If we get back to personal responsibility and accountability we can change things."

Stutzman was also asked about Arizona's immigration issue and he said he supported Arizona and always sides with state's rights.

On Afghanistan, Stutzman said its time for the United States to get out.

"We have to realize that part of the world has fought for thousands of years," said Stutzman. "I don't think we can fix it."
