Students Raise $1,500 For American Cancer Society In Memory Of Officer PolstonLEESBURG - Officer Terry Polston participated in Relay For Life for many years, raising funds to support those like himself whose life had been affected by cancer.
Although Terry died in December, his nephew, Nathan Polston, and Warsaw Community School Corp. students are keeping his passion for the relay alive.
Terry died after a battle with lung cancer and was the DARE officer for Warsaw Community School Corp. He also served as DARE officer for Nathan's sixth-grade class at Leesburg Elementary.American Cancer Society's Kosciusko County Relay For Life is Friday and Saturday at Kosciusko Community Fairgrounds.
Nathan, a sixth-grade teacher at Leesburg Elementary, formed a relay team and organized a penny drive to raise funds for this weekend's Kosciusko County Relay For Life.
"The relay was a big part of my uncle Terry's life, and he taught students while he was a DARE officer to make good choices and live life to the fullest," Nathan said.
Students from WCS raised approximately $1,500. The funds were collected May 11-15 and will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
There were five-gallon water jugs placed at each of the schools for students to donate pennies. The pennies were exchanged for cash and will be donated to the cancer society.
"It would make my uncle Terry cry if he knew how much effort the students put into raising funds for the American Cancer Society," Nathan said.
Vicki Harris, a student in Nathan's sixth-grade class at Leesburg, said she was happy to be a part of the penny drive.
"I think it is important to raise funds to fight cancer because my uncle passed away from stomach cancer a year and half ago," Harris said.
Nathan will walk this weekend in the relay with the team he organized called "Team OP".
Leesburg Elementary teachers and Nathan's parents, Randy and Rachael Polston, also will be a part of the team.
The team formed to remember Terry will be one of many who will walk to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
A relay opening ceremony will be Friday at Kosciusko Community Fairgrounds at 6 p.m. with a survivors opening lap. A survivors dinner will follow.
A luminary ceremony will be Friday at 9:30 p.m.
A closing and awards ceremony will be Saturday at 9 a.m.
