Students Create 'Fable Quilt'

Posted

Most people read their children fables from books, newspapers or magazines.

But how about reading fables on a quilt?

As a project, 76 students of Edgewood Middle School teacher Shawna Davenport's language arts class created a "fable quilt" with 35 different stories.

"The kids had to read 10 fables," she said. "They had to pick a moral. They then wrote their own story based on that moral."

The classes then chose to publish their stories on a quilt. Pictures to illustrate their stories were either hand-drawn or taken from the Internet.

"Most of these kids did five revisions" on their stories, Davenport said.

Davenport's mother, Theresa England, donated her time to sew the quilt.

Davenport said, "This is just a way to promote writing, publishing and technology. They were really proud of their work. ... We're really happy they got it done."

To display the quilt, middle school industrial technology teacher Nick Walenga is having his eighth-grade students build a quilt holder. The king-size quilt will be displayed at the school.

The project was financed through a grant from the Dekko Foundation.
