Story Of Miracles

Editor, Times-Union:

Hello! 2020 was a hard year for people. Some more than others, especially due to the passing of loved ones.

I wanted to share a little bit of how our year 2020 has been. First, I’ll share some from 2019.

In 2019, my almost-9-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with DIPG (a rare, inoperable brain tumor). In 2019, my almost-2-year-old grandson was diagnosed with severe Scoliosis (a condition causing curvature of the spine). Also, my wife was admitted to a nursing home after battling infections in her knee, a blood disorder, pneumonia, and a new colon cancer diagnosis, among other things. As for myself, I had a relapse with diverticulitis and was also hospitalized for several days.

Upon my granddaughter’s diagnosis, the doctors gave her an estimated 9-13 months left to live. That was July 2019. This has been hard on her, her sister and her parents. However, she’s never complained about all the blood draws, two rounds of intense radiation, losing her hair, her balance, then her ability to walk, and now her ability to speak. She is still a beautiful, brave little girl.

A few days before Thanksgiving 2020, her most recent MRI showed the tumor to be stable as well as showing the cancer cells inside the tumor are DYING! She is the only one on this trial to have these results. We give ALL glory to God, our Savior, for this wonderful news!

My grandson had a follow-up appointment at Riley Children’s Hospital for his Scoliosis. After being told at the start of his diagnosis that it was quite possible he’d need surgery to correct the curve, an updated x-ray showed the curve had been 90% straightened, even without the use of a brace!

In May 2020, my wife was admitted to the hospital and was in a coma. She was on a ventilator for two weeks. On a Friday night, we got a call from her doctor in Fort Wayne telling us we needed to come that night, as they did not expect her to survive. She was non-responsive; her pupils weren’t even responding to light. We finally arrived about three hours later (we also had to wait for approval for the hospital board to let my daughters and I into the hospital, due to Covid restrictions at the time). As the nurse walked us to her room, she informed us right before she came to get us, that my wife had opened her eyes on her own! We entered the room, and my wife started to cry. She recognized us and even tried to talk a little! Her doctor at the time had just been transferred there from Virginia. This person was a praying doctor, and they took the time to pray over all of us.

After 16 months in the hospital and nursing home, she CAME HOME on October 31, 2020. Due to the severity of her other issues while she was hospitalized, no one treated the colon cancer. However, she’s recently had a CT scan to recheck her colon cancer and the doctor could not find it! That doctor said “it doesn’t just magically disappear.” But we know a God who can make it disappear!

This is our story. Our story of miracles. We believe in a risen Savior, who came to this earth as a baby, to save us all. Even when life is hard, as you see it has been for us; NEVER stop praising His name, no matter how bad the storm. Stay faithful to Him, because He will always be faithful to you.

Merry Christmas!

With love and happy tears
