COLUMBIA CITY – Steven Wayne Mort, 50, of Pierceton, died at 9:59 a.m. Sept. 26, 2012, in South Bend Memorial Hospital, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
He was born April 6, 1962, in Columbia City, to Rex D. and Mary Jane Tenney Mort.
He spent his lifetime in the Pierceton area, graduating from Whitko High School in 1981, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and football. He then went onto college on a basketball scholarship, attending Glenoaks College, Centerville, Mich., and then graduated from Huntington College. He work on the Mort Family Farm for many years and then worked for Northern Lakes Electric, Warsaw, and for the past 15 years he was a woodwork finisher for J.C. Hammon Construction, Leesburg.
Surviving are his longtime companion, Melissa D. McKinney, Pierceton; four children: Samantha A. Mort (and Chris Staley), Austin D. Mort, Blase M. McKinney and Aressa A. Tackwell, all of Pierceton; his father, Rex D. Mort, Pierceton; his mother, Mary Jane (and spouse Mike) Layton, Fla.; a granddaughter; two brothers, Tim A. and Mark W. (and spouse Mary) Mort, all of Pierceton; and a step-grandfather, Ralph Thomas, Fort Wayne.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Sharon Brockhaus, certified funeral celebrant, officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Pierceton.
Calling is from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. ***** Memorials may be given to the Mort Grandchildren Educational Fund.
