PIERCETON – A Pierceton woman lauded by her town and family as a hero will serve as the grand marshal at the Pierceton Days parade this summer.
The theme for this year’s Pierceton Days is “A Day at the Circus” and will be Aug. 3 and 4.
Belva Stephens, who saved her mom from a kitchen fire July 31, will serve as the grand marshal for the town’s parade.
Lexie Stephens was cooking in her Pierceton home in July when flames from the stove got on her clothing and began to spread.
Her daughter, Belva, heard her mother’s screams and immediately was able to douse the flames.
The elder Stephens was taken to the St. Joseph Burn Center in Fort Wayne to recover.
Belva Stephens, who has Down syndrome, was celebrated by family and friends for saving her mother’s life.
In October, Belva Stephens was given a plaque by the town of Pierceton.
