STEM Students Use Fishing Outing To Help Learn About Math

Posted
Despite overcast and sometimes rainy conditions, fourth-graders from Washington STEM Academy enjoyed some fishing during school Thursday.
Washington STEM Instructional Coach Ben Barkey headed up the exercise, and 15 kids each hour learned how to cast, bait a hook and catch fish at a pond south of Warsaw.
Information, such as the number of fish caught, the type of fish and the bait used was recorded, and students will use that data in math class.
With the students divided among three teams – the teams used bee moths, red worms and night crawlers – they caught 184 fish throughout the day.
Assisting Barkey with the students were Washington STEM teachers Scott Bailey and Gary Hawblitzel, Conservation Officers John Cook and Guido Tims and Times-Union Sports Editor Dale Hubler.
