NAPPANEE - The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres will open its 2007 season with the small ensemble cast play "Steel Magnolias" by Robert Harling. This year marks the 20th anniversary of "Steel Magnolias," which opened off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in 1987 and quickly moved to the larger Lucille Lortel Theatre, where it ran for 1,126 performances. "Steel Magnolias" made its Broadway debut in a 2005 revival.

Both a comedy and a tearjerker, "Steel Magnolias" follows the lives of six indomitable Southern women as they share their personal triumphs, tragedies, beauty tips, recipes and more than the occasional piece of scandalous gossip in Truvy's beauty shop in Chinquapin, La.

At the center of the group is Shelby Eatenton, newly married and joyfully pregnant, despite the fact that her diabetes could get in the way. Her mother, M'Lynn Eatenton, looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fears in order to join Shelby in celebrating the miracle of a new life.

The popular 1989 film version starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis.

"Steel Magnolias" is a Second Stage production of The Round Barn Theatre season and runs in the intimate setting of the Locke Township Meeting House on Friday and Saturday evenings, March 2-17 at 7 p.m. It is directed by Round Barn Theatre veteran and new Artistic Director Jeremy Littlejohn. Tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for students up to 17 years old. Reservations can be made be calling the Round Barn Box Office at 800-800-4942, Ext. 2.
