SYRACUSE - Indiana's First Lady Judy O'Bannon visited Syracuse Elementary School Thursday and presented the Indiana Department of Environmental Management's Jumpstart grant for $6,253.50 to the Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District.
The district presented O'Bannon with a bird house made from recycled materials.
She was also treated with a song from Mrs. Paula Markley's fourth grade class, which won a contest for naming a newsletter that will be distributed three times a week. The winning name, "The Reuse, Renew, Recycle Review," is printed by the solid waste management district and is meant to inform the public of how to better use resources.
"Now isn't this worth coming to Syracuse for?" asked O'Bannon, surrounded by the fourth grade class.
The class was concerned they wouldn't be able to get an "authentic" autograph from O'Bannon, but the First Lady reassured them, telling them she would send them "something better."
"You're not going to forget, are you?" asked one of the class.
O'Bannon shook her head and pointed to some of her staff, telling the kids, "Don't worry, these people won't let me forget, that's their job."
Later in the evening, O'Bannon appeared in North Manchester, at the college union, to speak to the Wabash County Mental Health Association.
