State Makes April Child Abuse Prevention Month

Posted

Forty-one children died as a result of abuse and neglect in 1999. Thirty of these deaths were at the hands of the natural parents or a family member; 25 were under the age of three.

Prevention is critical.

In data collected by the Indiana Family & Social Services Administration, the most common stress factor identified in these deaths was lack of parenting skills.

Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, founded in 1977, has made educating parents and caregivers about prevention the focus for Indiana Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Awareness Month.

Every April, Prevent Child Abuse Indiana implements a public education campaign to inform Hoosiers about how they can prevent abuse and neglect.

"Change is Possible" is the theme for April.

Prevent Child Abuse Indiana believes statistics can change. To reduce the risk of abuse and neglect, a parent or caregiver should be a nurturing parent, help a friend, relative or neighbor who is parenting, learn how to calm a crying baby and report suspected abuse or neglect.
