STATEHOUSE – Kosciusko County farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years were recently honored with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to area legislators.
"Agriculture is and will continue to be part of Indiana's history and economic success," said State Rep. David Abbott (R-Rome City). "These Hoosier families have shown true dedication to their craft and their traditions."
The Jacob Bucher Farm, in operation since 1923, and the Kolberg Farm, in operation since 1899, both received the centennial award.
"There are many long days and nights, and a ton of sweat equity that goes into running a successful farming operation," said Snow, a member of the House Agriculture and Rural Development Committee. "These families worked hard to pass down agricultural knowledge, and our state is stronger because of it."
Farms owned and maintained by the same family for 100, 150 and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Agriculture makes significant contributions to Indiana's economy, cementing it as an invaluable profession for our state," said State Sen. Ryan Mishler (R-Mishawaka). "I am pleased to represent a community dedicated to continuing their family heritage for decades, and I congratulate the Jacob Bucher Farm and the Kolberg Farm for receiving these awards."
These farm families were among 103 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their commitment to agriculture.
Hoosier Homestead award ceremonies are conducted yearly in the spring and summer to commemorate farm families for their legacies and contributions to Indiana's agriculture industry. Since the program started in 1976, the state has honored more than 6,000 farms with this designation.
