Everyone complains about their taxes, but no one complained Monday at a public hearing for budgets of Kosciusko County townships, municipalities and governing agencies for 1999 and the tax levies and rates collectable in 1999 was conducted by the State Board of Tax Commissioners in the county courthouse.
Representatives from the state board took the budgets and books and allowed for remonstrators. No members of the public appeared.
The various budgets included county welfare, 17 townships, 13 towns and cities, solid waste district, Barbee Lakes Conservancy District, four school corporations and five libraries in the county.
Proposed tax rates to fund the county budget (per $100 of assessed valuation) include: general fund, $.5337; health, $.0440; cumulative bridge, $.0622; cumulative capital development, $.0895; cumulative jail, $.0179; and cumulative reassessment, $.0379. Total proposed county tax rate for 1999 is $.7852.
Last year's total was $.7279 per $100 of assessed valuation.
After review by the state board of tax commissioners, the county will receive its final, state-approved tax rate by Feb. 15.
Details The representatives from the state board will work on the budgets in town until Monday. The representatives will call the various units when the budgets are ready or if questions arise.
Any budget cuts that are necessary must be made by the governing bodies, but the state board will consult with them.
The state board will work on the school corporations first, then the county, and then the large towns. Law requires the public hearing, which was held Monday.
