State Grant Targeted For Runway Expansion

A state grant will help Warsaw's airport expand a runway this spring.

According to State Senator Kent Adams (R-Bremen), the Indiana Department of Transportation has approved a grant of $140,000 to help the Warsaw airport lengthen its east-west runway.

Airport manager Lance Ropte said Thursday the grant requires an equal amount of matching local funds, and will pay for approximately half the expansion cost.

The project will add 500 feet to the end of the east-west runway, making the runway 6,000 feet long, he said.

"The expansion will allow aircraft currently based at Warsaw to take on more fuel to go longer distances," he said. The extension will be used for take-off only, not landing.

Ropte emphasized that the runway extension will not affect CR 100E or traffic on CR 100E at all.

He expects work on the runway to begin in late spring or early summer, and the project should be completed within a month.
