SYRACUSE – Stanley M. “Stan” Custer, 92, of Milford, successfully completed his journey in this life and began his new life with his Lord at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, 2018, at his home.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1926, in Rankin, Ill., to John and Lillian Baumgartner Custer. He attended Millersburg High School and lived most of his life in the Milford area.

He was married to his wife of 72 years, Phyllis Maxine Evans, on Nov. 17, 1946, in Milford, and she survives.

He left school early to start his own business and worked hard to save enough money to purchase his own milk route. He was a self-employed drainage contractor and later in life he engineered, constructed, and operated Big Boulder Golf Course in Milford and Little Bighorn Golf Course in Warsaw.

He was member of the Christian Church in Milford, where he served as deacon, elder and trustee. He unselfishly assisted in a major building project for the church and was a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Milford.

He enjoyed fishing, golf, euchre, family, friends and traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Custer of Milford; three sons: Darrell Ray (Mabel) Custer of Milford, Dale Gene (Peg) Custer of Milford and Dwight “Ike” Custer of Lehigh Acres, Fla.; six grandchildren: Kelly (Mark) McCormack, Derek (Brenda) Custer, Leslie (Nate) Conley, Adam (Marissa) Custer, Clint Custer and Andrew (Alyssa) Custer; and 10 great-grandchildren: Austin, Cohen, Brooks, Casen, Dominoe, Zideon and Xzariya Custer; Ella and Jacob Conley; and Beckam McCormack

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Dorthea Elder, Snowden “Joan” Dierks and Charlotte “Schotzie” Cooper; and two brothers, Raymond and Myrtus Custer.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at Owen Family Funeral Home, 1001 S. Huntington St., Syracuse, and one hour prior to services on Sunday at the church.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, at the Christian Church, 201 N. Henry St., Milford, with Pastor Rick Brouillette officiating.

Private family burial will take place in the Leesburg Cemetery at a later date.
