DECATUR - Staff Sergeant Phillip Chad Jenkins, 26, formerly of Decatur, living in Wahiawa, Hawaii, was killed in action Sept. 7, 2010, in Iraq.
He was born Sept. 27, 1983, in Decatur, to David A. and Rose M. Hauter Jenkins. On July 21, 2008, he married Melissa L. Hays, who survives.
He was a member of Eagles Lodge 2653, Decatur; the Warsaw Veterans of Foreign Wars; and American Legion. He was with the Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, Second Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. He was a 2002 Bellmont High School graduate.
Also surviving are two daughters, Lindly M. Stuckey and Piper C. Jenkins, both of Wahiawa, Hawaii; his mother, Rose M. Jenkins, Decatur; mother-in-law, Debby Feurer, Gahanna, Ohio; father-in-law, Mike Hays, Louisville, Ky.; a sister, Cassie K. Jenkins, Decatur; two brothers-in-law, Matt and Nick Hays, both of Louisville, Ky.; and paternal grandmother, Darlene Carlile, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by grandparents, Gordon and Betty Hauter and Roy Carlile.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bellmont High School, 1000 N. Adams Drive, Decatur. A private burial will be at Decatur Cemetery. The funeral procession will be leaving the school following the service. Any members of the community wishing to show their support are asked to line the sidewalks along Monroe Street, starting at Limberlost Trail in Stratton Addition to 13th Street (U.S. 27).
