SYRACUSE - A Syracuse man is in critical condition this morning after being stabbed at least four times Sunday night after an argument with another man.

The suspect is jailed on a charge of felony aggravated battery.

Charles Fink, 56, of Syracuse, was found in his vehicle about 10:13 p.m. Sunday after the truck he was driving struck a pole at the intersection of Huntington and East Chicago streets in Syracuse. Police at first believed the incident was simply a traffic accident, but an examination of Fink indicated that he was suffering from punctures and cuts not related to the accident.

Information obtained during the investigation led police to William Richard Harvey, 49, of 12262 Kern Road, Syracuse, as a suspect in the case.

After Harvey allegedly barricaded himself in his residence, Syracuse police called for assistance from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. The SWAT team also was called out.

Harvey is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond in the Kosciusko County Jail.

Harvey allegedly used a paring knife to stab Fink after the two men were involved in a dispute at a Syracuse fraternal organization, from which they reportedly were asked to leave. Harvey then apparently returned to his home, where he was allegedly washing his bloody clothes when police arrived and attempted to gain entry to Harvey's home.

Police said that Fink lost a large amount blood and that at least one wound was to Fink's chest. He was taken to Goshen General Hospital before being airlifted to Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he underwent emergency surgery.

The case remains under investigation by the Syracuse Police Department. Also assisting in the investigation were the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, Warsaw Police Department, Indiana State Police and Syracuse Emergency Medical Services.
