Squires Take Second At Meet

Posted

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊThe Whitko, Manchester and Northfield boys and girls track teams got a preview of some Three Rivers Conference opponents Tuesday night in South Whitley.

Northfield won both sides of the three-way meet, scoring 72 points in the girls contest and 69 points in the boys meet. Manchester took second in both competitions, scoring 45 in the girls meet and 50 in the boys meet. Whitko placed third with the girls earning 36 points and the boys racking up 48.

Manchester took an early lead in the boys competition after David Bazzoni won the long jump with a leap of 19 feet 5 1/2 inches, and Paul Sommer placed first in the shot put with a toss of 38-0 1/2.

However, Northfield fought back to take first place in the next three events, the dicsus, the 3200 relay and the 110 hurdles.

Whitko's first first-place finish came in the

dash when Brandon Waterson crossed the line in 11.3 seconds, just one-tenth of a second ahead of teammate Adam Hall, who finished in 11.4 seconds.

Waterson, who was competing in his first meet after a knee injury, also anchored Whitko's first-place 400 relay team.

"It was nice to see Brandon Waterson compete," said Whitko coach Ron Cherry. "This is his first meet of the season because he had a knee injury."

In all, Northfield raked in eight firsts in 16 events, while Manchester picked up six and Whitko had two.

"We lost, but we really ran our best meet of the year," said Cherry. "We ran well, but we just had some holes where we didn't score. We are young, but we are getting better."

Along with his first in the long jump, Bazzoni won the pole vault and the high jump competitions to lead Manchester.

"Overall, we did all right," said Manchester coach Ned Bowman. "We had a good effort from everyone on the team. Nate Kerr did well in the 400, and David Bazzoni placed first in his three events again, the pole vault, long jump and high jump."

On the girls' side of the action, Northfield jumped out to the early lead after winning the shot put competition. Whitko's Natalie Graves won the high jump with a leap of 4-6, and then Manchester's Monica Minnix tossed the discus 94-10 to place first.

Lydia Flora broke a Squire record in the 3200, topping the old record of 12:25 by two seconds with a 12:23.

Northfield took home first-place finishes in nine of the 15 events, while Manchester placed first in five events, with Tina French taking the top place in the 100 and the 200. Whitko picked up one first-place finish.

"Tonight we did not run our best meet ever," said Whitko coach Mark Rickerd. "We had a couple of girls who did well. Jolene Reed ran really well tonight. Miranda Wilkinson did not have her best meet tonight, but she is definitely a mainstay on our team."

Whitko is at Churubusco Thursday, while Manchester's girls are at Carroll Thursday. The Squire boys hit the track again May 3 for the Wabash County meet at Manchester College.
