Squires Down Valley Netters

AKRON - When she plays with confidence, Manchester High School girls tennis coach Eric Christiansen says Courtney Ingold is tough to beat.

Playing in the No. 1 singles slot against Three Rivers Conference rival Tippecanoe Valley Monday afternoon, the Manchester senior seemed to play with confidence.

Ingold defeated Valley's Brooke Prater 6-3, 6-1 in the first match to finish, as the Squires defeated the host Vikings 4-1.

"For Courtney to be the first one off the court is good," said Christiansen, whose Squires improved to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the TRC. "This is the first time she's been the first match done and not lost. When she plays with confidence she's tough to beat. When she's not confident she can be easy to beat."

The Squires won all three singles matches, as well as the No. 1 doubles match.

Valley's lone varsity win came in the No. 2 doubles match, where Kelsey Kitch and Tara Scott defeated Jillian Seitz and Cindi Myers 6-2, 6-1.

Christiansen said two of his normal varsity players were out last night because of other committments, forcing him to change his lineup.

While they didn't win, he said he was proud of Seitz and Myers, who were moved up from the junior varsity team.

"I'm proud of the two girls that played No. 2 doubles," said Christiansen. "We haven't won a JV match this season. They (Seitz and Myers) have won matches, but we haven't won a match as a team. I thought they played well. I thought they got some experience tonight."

Valley won Monday's junior varsity match with a 4-1 team score.

In the second varsity match to finish, Manchester's Paige Coulter-Kern defeated Sheena Reed 6-2, 6-1.

"Paige is just a good athlete all around," said Christiansen. "She qualifed for events at state in track as a freshman and now she plays tennis. She's a good athletic girl."

At No. 2 singles, Manchester's Kristen Lahman defeated Lindsay Stavedahl 6-4, 6-0.

In No. 1 doubles action, the Squires' Laura Hand and Whitney Woods topped Andrea Kindig and Maribeth Martin 6-3, 6-2.

Manchester will be in action again Monday at Southwood, while Valley hosts North Judson today.
