FORT WAYNE -ÊThe Manchester Squires boys basketball team overcame a 10-5 first-quarter deficit to defeat Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger 46-32 Saturday.
The Squires were down 17-9 with 1:45 left in the half when Eric Swan stole the ball and took it down the court for a lay-up.
This sparked a 10-0 Manchester run that gave the Squires a 19-17 lead at the half.
The third quarter started the way the second ended, with Manchester going on a 6-0 run in the first three minutes.
"They picked up the intensity in the last two minutes of the first half," said Dwenger coach Chris Johnson. "They went on a 10-0 run and we just folded. It had a snowball effect that continued into the second half."
After two Dwenger baskets, Nate Little went on a six-point run for the Squires, netting three baskets in just over three minutes.
"Nate Little was a big spark for us all night," said Manchester coach Gary Goshert. "He came off the bench and played good defense as usual, but he also provided a scoring punch for us. He gave us the shot in the arm that we needed.
"His surge in the third quarter helped us gain control of the game and extend our lead."
Manchester held Dwenger to just five points in the third and took a 31-22 lead into the fourth frame.
Dwenger scored 10 points in the third, but Manchester continued to dominate and came out on top 46-32.
Manchester is 9-1, and Dwenger falls to 5-4 for the season.
"We scored more points in the first 10 minutes than we did the whole rest of the game," said Johnson.
"We wanted to take the half time momentum and extend it into the third and fourth quarter," said Goshert. "We had several guys come off the bench and help achieve that."
