NORTH WEBSTER - Jeremy Sponseller, public works superintendent, reported to the board that the new Volvo backhoe had arrived, and the department had already used it.
The storm drain at Epworth Forest Road was repaired, and some gutter repairs were made after storm damage.
Sponseller recommended to the board that the Hoosier Blue Flame liquid propane tank be replaced with one from Stump's LP Gas. The board approved the recommendation.
Sponseller proposed installation of another night light on Hickory Street. All agreed to look into the issue further in regards to cost and logistics.
The board was made aware of the potential problem that the sludge drying beds aren't working properly, and the tanks are filling up.
Sponseller said his department is wary of adding more sludge into the beds if there is an obstruction causing the malfunction. Sponseller plans to stay on top of the problem, and will report back to the board as things progress.
Town Marshall Greg Church reported his April incidents. The department handled 170 incident reports including one battery, eight thefts and only one accident.
Church informed the council that a concerned citizen expressed a fear that children fishing on the new South Street Bridge may fall into the channel. One option would be to post a "No Fishing" sign on the bridge like the old bridge had. Church agreed to monitor the activity on the bridge and report back to the board.
Sue Studebaker, Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District director, was present to discuss the movement of the recycling bins. Previously, the bins were at Lance's Grocery.
Since the parking lot has been replaced at the old area, all involved have been looking for a new place for the community to recycle.
A new site at the end of Himes Street was proposed. The property is owned by Rick White. White tentatively agreed to the use of his property for this purpose.
Town Council President Jon Sroufe said he will look into the new site with regard to space needed for trucks entering, a three-sided fence to be built to keep blowing recyclables from littering, as well as grading the road for accessibility. Studebaker also will inspect the potential new site.
The next town council meeting will be at 6 p.m. June 12 in North Webster Community Center.
