Mentone Elementary Student Council promoted literacy this week at the school by sponsoring a ‘Reading Spirit Week’ to get students excited about reading. On Monday, students wore red to celebrate all the books they have read. Tuesday was ‘Twin Day’ and students dressed like a friend to celebrate reading. Wednesday was ‘Hats Off to Reading Day’ and everyone wore their favorite hat. Thursday, students dressed like their favorite book characters. The grand finale to the week was Friday when teachers read a declaration to make every child read at the Friday Morning Live Convocation. Students sang a ‘Read Across America’ song and Student Council President Jada Hicks presented teachers and staff with an appreciation certificate for helping students learn to be great readers. Friday also was ‘Relax and Read Day’ and students wore their pajamas (pictured) and spent time relaxing around the school while enjoying reading. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program sponsored by NEA. The week is celebrated in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Read Across America started in 1997 to create a day to celebrate reading.
