Sowers Rides in Bike-a-Thon

During the week of Oct. 20, Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, partnered with the Special Olympics College at Purdue, hosted Biking for David in hopes of raising money for people with special needs.

Delta Zeta sorority also paired up to help run the bike-a-thon.

From 4 p.m. Oct. 19 to 4 p.m. Oct. 22, someone was always riding on one of three stationary bikes.

Biking for David was named after David Feltner, a senior in the College of Technology who died June 5. Feltner had a rare form of cancer.

Branden Sowers, a Warsaw Community High School 2009 graduate and Push America chairman for Pi Kappa Phi and junior in the College of Health and Human Sciences, was quoted in The Exponent newspaper as saying Feltner was still active in the community whenever he could be.

“David was one of the founders of our partnership with Lafayette Jefferson High School’s special needs classroom,” said Sowers. “While at Purdue, he helped on and off (when he was not receiving treatment). Biking for David is a continuation of his service.”

Pi Kappa Phi hoped to raised $3,000 to $5,000, according to Sowers. The money raised benefits Push America, The Arc of Tippecanoe County and Midwest Assistance Dogs Inc. All of these organizations serve people with special needs and disabilities.

Branden is the son of Carl and Laura Sowers.
