Editor, Times-Union: Southern Kosciusko County is going to be the next disaster area. Just take a drive around and see what is new. The huge building might look like an improvement but the same problems will be there, only larger than they were. This is only the beginning since the APC saw fit to dismiss our group and deny any local ordinances. When conflict of interest rears its ugly head, we pay the price.
A few months ago, a farmer wanted to put in a CAFO in a neighborhood filled with homes. His neighbors all let him know they did not want to be a part of the ongoing process of well testing and flies and stench. These people wanted to be able to enjoy the out of doors, not be locked inside because of the pollution. He decided it was better to have neighbors who respected him than have the added income and be hated.
Another farmer has been told by many people that his proposed CAFOs are not wanted in the area. It may even cause some long-established business to move away. Several in the area have health problems. They don’t need the constant air pollution. How much power does someone need over others? Add to all of this the fact that the CAFOs are proposed in the overlay corridor and it is supposed to be set aside for further development of the area. The rules state that anything allowed in this area would need to enhance it, not destroy it.
Why isn’t this rule enforced since it is a zoning rule?
