SOUTH WHITLEY – At Monday's South Whitley Town Council meeting, rescheduled from Tuesday, new Town Marshal Chad Schipper was sworn in by Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple.
Previous Town Marshal Mikel Vandevender is taking the position of school resource officer with Whitko Community Schools.
Council President Brock Waterson welcomed Schipper to South Whitley.
"Mikel will be an excellent SRO and Chad will be an excellent marshal," he said.
In new business, council approved a $2,500 tree removal quote from Phillips Tree Service of Pierceton for a tree behind Moyer's Corner Cafe.
Council also approved a street closure from 5 p.m. to midnight on July 5 for a fireworks celebration at the town park. There will be a food truck starting at 7 p.m., and fireworks will take place near the plane.
Council heard from Ryan Houin of Fourway of Plymouth. Fourway is collaborating with Surf Internet to improve internet connection in rural areas around South Whitley.
In other business, council also:
• Approved a $300 allowance for new police polos for Schipper and Vandevender.
• Approved the latest Community Crossings Matching Grant project proposal for street improvements.
• Heard praise for officer Isaac Haupert's handling of a recent shooting outside town.
Council's next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. July 8.
