SOUTH WHITLEY – At Tuesday night's meeting, the South Whitley Town Council voted to accept an agreement of $130,000 to purchase the bank building and adjacent parking lot at 101 E. Columbia St. from owner Tony Starkey.
In new business, the council approved a street closure on Slater Drive from 4 to 11 p.m. Aug. 8 for an AmVets fundraiser.
Council voted to adopt a bond ordinance for an upcoming utility project, pending state revolving fund funding. The town will hear of expected funding by the end of August.
Clerk-Treasurer Alyssa Knepple invited council to a Municipal Unit Strategic Taskforce (MUST) meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 12. Council approved a 5.3% contribution to the taskforce's payment to Baker Tilly for their financial advisory services, which is split by population size between the municipalities. The taskforce is planning for Local Income Tax (LIT) fund allocations ahead of the effects of Senate Bill 1 in the coming years.
Council heard from Ruth Stanley of the South Whitley Community Public Library, whose last summer concert will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 6. Pending weather, there will be an ice cream truck parked on Front Street. In case of rain, the concert will be held indoors at the library.
In other business, council:
• Approved a utilities adjustment of $41.06.
• Heard the police department has a new informational Facebook page, "Town of South Whitley P.D."
• Approved a $500 sponsorship to the B.A.B.E. Mini Golf Outing on Sept. 24.
• Approved claims totaling $403,720.41.
Council will next meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11.
