Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management Board of Directors discussed the upcoming December free shred event at their meeting Tuesday.
The final free shred event for 2025 will be from noon to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2.
Tom Ganser, executive director of KC Recycling, said, “I think there’s value there … I think what we always try to do, and what this board has been good about, is providing services that aren’t necessarily provided in the community."
Both Ganser and Janelle Meyer, education outreach and marketing coordinator, said that they have heard a lot from community members about how much they appreciate this service and have also received calls from residents asking when the next event will be.
Meyer said she believes the majority of attendees would keep holding on to their sensitive paperwork if it were not for the event. In offering this service, they are keeping people's private information more secure.
The board also:
• Approved a resolution transferring $250 from the education account to the liability, property and vehicle insurance account. A surety claim came in that was higher than what was initially budget for in the insurance account.
• Heard the Kosciusko County Recycling Depot is one of the only places in the county to accept sharps. The depot will also provide residents with free sharps containers if needed when sharps are dropped off.
• Reminded the community about the depot's reuse room. They offer open cans of paint and various items from the community that can be reused.
• Last month, 36,000 tons of waste went to the landfill, and Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management made over $515,000 in fees.
• Heard the depot has a partnership with Better World Books. KC Recycling receives two to four gaylords of books every month. Better World Books takes the books, sells what they can, and breaks down the books that are unsellable into recyclable components.
