During Environmental Week, April 21-28, the Solid Waste Management District collected 90 televisions and more than four tons of electronics.

Executive Director Sue Studebaker said more than 300 people visited the Depot at 220 S. Union St., Warsaw.

"It was very successful and well worth our time and effort," she told the KCSWMD board Tuesday. "And it hasn't slowed down."

Drawing winners were given as Merl Montel, who won the composter; Gloria Welling, who won the recycled horse-shaped swing made of recycled tires; Sara Hazebrouck, dinner and a movie; and Kristi Sloan, the birdhouse.

Poster winners were Kylie Mason, Triton Elementary School, first place; Patrick Mosher, Harrison Elementary School, second place; Ricky Palenske, Harrison, third place; and Tyler Blocher, Monarch Christian Academy, fourth place.

The Depot has a reuse room where people bring partly used cans of paint and people can take it for free. Studebaker said 712 pounds of paint left the room in April and, as of May 15, another 738 pounds were taken for reuse.

In March, 5,149 pounds of electronics were collected; in April, 11,061 pounds of electronics were taken to the Depot for recycling, Studebaker said.

In other business, the board:

n Approved the installation of awnings over the Depot's east and south side windows and the front entrance door. It is hoped this will stop rainwater from entering the building.

n Approved the purchase of a copier from Sands Equipment, Warsaw.

n Heard the paving project at Lance's Supermarket in North Webster is complete, but needs a year to cure before the recycling stations and dump trucks can return to the area.

Currently, the recycling stations are at the North Webster Community Center.

n Approved a resolution to apply for a medical sharps management grant with the Monroe County Task Force.

n Approved a contract with Clark County Solid Waste District, which will administer a household hazardous waste grant, of which Kosciusko County is a part.

n Approved overtime pay for assistant Kevin Slone, who worked more than 40 hours during Environmental Week. Anyone working more than 40 hours a week is entitled to overtime pay.

n Welcomed Jerry Clevenger to the board of directors. Clevenger is the Winona Lake town council representative.

Board members are county commissioners Brad Jackson, Bob Conley and Ron Truex; Warsaw Mayor Ernie Wiggins; City Councilman George Clemens; and County Councilman John Kinsey. Truex and Clemens were absent.
