Social Decay

Well done placing a question mark after Responsibility in the title of Charlotte Allen's letter published May 12, 2008.

I can't believe that a mother would write such a reckless letter, describing her son as a responsible, great boy with a kind heart who has made just a little mistake.

Let me provide my interpretation of Mrs. Allen's letter: My son is a responsible young who would never do anything wrong. Just because he impregnated his teenage girl friend, quit school to get a job, then instead of being at home helping to raise his child, he is spending his money on the violent sport of ultimate fighting while illegally buying alcohol, becoming intoxicated and fighting with police officers doesn't make him a bad boy. This is just the first time he has been caught he will try harder not to be caught next time.

Yep, that sounds like a responsible, respectful and caring young man to me ... NOT.

This is a prime example of how the lack of sound judgement in parenting and the breakdown of the family contributes to the decay of ethical and moral values in our society. It also shows us that the problem now spans entire families (see Sondon Allen's letter, same day) and multiple generations.

It is our responsibility to report to the police all crime. When we take on this responsibility, it strengthens our community and holds parents responsible for teaching their children strong values.
