Snow Keeps Police Busy With Accidents

Posted
The snowy weather over the past couple days had police officers busy responding to slide-offs and accidents.

Mark Steinwedel, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service North Webster post, said Tuesday afternoon the county saw about 8 inches on average.

“One of the most impressive ones is 7 miles east, southeast of Leesburg reported 10.0 inches,” Steinwedel said, noting that could be a little high due to drifting. “But also, some low ones are just 1 mile north of Warsaw. We had a report of 5.7 inches, and that seems like that could be a little low. So, somewhere between maybe 6 and 10 inches was sort of the common amount in the area.”

That snowstorm caused all area schools to close for the day, along with the city of Warsaw government offices and Kosciusko County government offices. Town council meetings and school board meetings have been rescheduled due to the weather and first responders have been on their toes.

Kosciusko County 911 Director Sarah Lancaster broke down the calls each department responded to between 4:30 p.m. Monday until 1:50 p.m. Tuesday.

Warsaw Police Department responded to three accidents and six slide-offs; Winona Lake Police Department had one slide-off; Syracuse Police had one slide-off; Silver Lake Police had one slide-off and one accident; Pierceton Police had one slide-off and one accident; North Webster Police had one accident; Indiana State Police had one slide-off; and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to three accidents and nine slide-offs.

“There is a chance for some very light snow (tonight) to Thursday and about a 50% chance of it occurring, and if it does snow, it would be an inch or less,” Steinwedel said. “The next system to watch isn’t until about late Sunday and Sunday night could have a mix of rain and snow with it, but that’s pretty far out. The trend is that we’re going to remain cold the rest of the week but into the weekend and early next week it could warm up enough to maybe mix some rain into the system.”

The Tippecanoe Valley School Board meeting was rescheduled to 6 p.m. tonight at the Tippecanoe Valley Middle School.

The Kosciusko County Commissioners meeting was rescheduled to 9 a.m. Friday.

The North Webster Town Council meeting was rescheduled to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the North Webster Community Center.

Whitley County remained under a red travel advisory Tuesday after the area received a foot of snow. The blowing and drifting restricted or completely closed many of the county’s north/south roads, and motorists were told to refrain from traveling until the status changes.
