Rockin’ BBQ for Riley was held at the Kosciusko County Community Fairgrounds earlier this month. The event featured a concert, youth fair and the Kansas City BBQ Society competition. The KCBS competition began May 7 with teams entering the fairgrounds and setting up. The competition the following day saw 27 teams competing. The judging portion of the competition kicked off May 9. Teams from six states competed for top honors and the winning title in four meat categories that were pre-determined by KCBS. The Smokin’Aces won the overall competition with One2BBQ as the runner up. The Riley’s Youth Fair, featuring youth organizations from around the community, promoted summer programs. Health and safety groups were on hand to help promote youth awareness and education. LeAnn Stewart and Deb Collier schools of dance held demonstrations for the Saturday crowds. The Lutheran Samaritan helicopter made an appearance. The youth fair also featured pony and carnival rides that benefited Riley Children’s Hospital. The bands Slaughter and Subterfuge entertained a full grandstand with late 80’s rock and roll music for three and half hours. Net proceeds from the weekend go to benefiting Riley Children’s Hospital. The Rockin’ BBQ for Riley total purse was $7,000. The committee is looking for organizations, volunteers and sponsors to participate next year, with the hope that this becomes an annual fundraiser.
