Warsaw sophomores Collette Smith and Ella Knight claimed Northern Lakes Conference girls tennis titles at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, and the Lady Tigers finished third in conference tournament that concluded at the WCHS courts Friday evening. The third-place finish matched Warsaw’s standing in the regular season, clinching the overall three-spot for the Lady Tigers. After winning her first set 6-2 against Elkhart Memorial senior Taylor Freedline, Smith dropped a second-set tiebreaker before winning a closely-contested third set, 6-4, to claim her title. Knight’s match was a set shorter, making relatively quick work of Plymouth’s Cortni Cook, 6-3, 6-0 to earn her crown. Liza Lewis finished fourth in the NLC at No. 1 singles, dropping her consolation match 6-4, 6-4 to Concord’s Alana Brubaker. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Hannah Rice and junior Athena Schlitt finished third in the tourney after their 6-4, 6-2 win over Memorial’s Layla Jojo and Maggie Dickerson. Smith and Knight were named to the all-conference team, and Lewis honorable mention all-conference. Memorial’s Krystal Grubb was the champion at No. 1 singles, beating NorthWood’s Sydney Wysong in three sets for the title. Grubb was also named all-conference, as were Plymouth’s No. 1 doubles team of Kendall Dreibelbis and McKenzie Sheets and Memorial’s No. 2 doubles squad, Hannah Hakim and Makennize Williams. Plymouth finished as the regular-season and tournament champions. Memorial was second in the tournament and over the course of the regular season as well. Now the Lady Tigers will host the Warsaw Sectional next week, with the tournament draw set for Monday in the Warsaw athletic office and the competition beginning Wednesday.
