Six Lunch And Learn Tutor Training Tuesdays To Be Offered

Join Warsaw Adult Education and Kosciusko Literacy Services at Gateway Education Center for six Lunch and Learn Tutor Trainings at 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Tuesday.
New and existing tutors may attend one or all the sessions. A light lunch is provided, so registration is required.

Gateway is at 201 North Union St., Warsaw.
The topics for the session are:
– Tuesday, The Impact of Poverty on the Adult Learner
Help your student overcome socio-economic barriers to learning, outlined in Ruby Payne’s book “A Framework for Understanding Poverty”
– July 17, Fluency and Comprehension
Fluency is the ability to read with ease and efficiency, and comprehension is the process of constructing meaning from the written word. Help your student connect meaning to written passages.
– July 24, Basic Math
Numeracy is the ability to reason and apply simple mathematical concepts. The lack of numeracy has a negative impact on literacy, careers and healthcare decisions. Help your student overcome the fear of math.
– July 31, English as a Second Language
Learning English as a new language may be daunting as an adult. Learn how to connect to a student when you do not speak the same language.
– Aug. 7, Health Literacy
Literacy is a stronger predictor of one’s health than age, income, employment, education or ethnic group. Help your student improve his health by improving his literacy skills.
– Aug. 14, Word Attack and Context
In addition to skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension, new readers need word attack strategies to decode unknown words by context. Help your student develop strategies to decode new words.
