Six Errors Sink Tippecanoe Valley

Posted

How ugly was Monday's baseball game between Tippecanoe Valley and Triton?

"It wasn't a real pretty game, I didn't think," Triton coach Jim Shively said. "Neither team played great. They made a few errors, we made a few errors."

This coming from a coach who watched his team win 11-1. This also coming from a coach who watched two baseball teams combine for nine errors.

Tippecanoe Valley committed six errors, and Triton had three.

But Triton's offense and pitching made up for its mistakes. The Trojans finished with 10 hits, while Valley managed but three hits and one earned run off Triton starter Matt Savill (1-0).

Branden Clauss pitched a perfect sixth inning to end the game.

Valley starter Seth Mikel (0-2) labored through five innings, allowing eight hits and 10 runs in taking the loss. Five of the 10 runs were earned.

The Vikings committed two errors in the first inning and three errors in the fifth inning, leading to three Triton runs in the first and four Triton runs in the fifth. All four runs in the fifth were unearned as Valley's defense faltered.

Triton's Schuyler Stutzman and Matt Wanemacher each finished with two hits.

"At least we put the ball in play and ran the bases a little better than they did and put a little pressure on them," Shively said.

"We forced a few things, which caused them to make some mistakes. We have to do that if we don't hit the ball well."

B.J. Cunningham had two of Valley's three hits and scored the Vikings' lone run.

Triton improved to 2-1, while Tippecanoe Valley fell to 0-4.
