SILVER LAKE – A village post office will open Friday at the Silver Lake Town Hall. Silver Lake will open its location at town hall, 604 N. Jefferson St., at 10 a.m. Friday, according to a release issued by the United States Postal Service. The town hall is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. The new postal center will be officially opened by Acting Manager of Post Office Operations Bobby Goins. Several postal service and local officials will be present at the event. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, and an open house will follow from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. The existing Silver Lake Post Office at 104 E. Main St. will remain open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon. Saturday window hours will remain from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Silver Lake Clerk-Treasurer Tonya Conley said Silver Lake Town Hall was delighted to be able to offer the services of a village post office to the community. “We feel that if we didn’t do it, it would be a disservice to the public,” Conley said. “The local post office now has reduced hours — 8 a.m. to noon, so we wanted to serve the people of Silver Lake better by offering them the opportunity to buy stamps and drop off their mail when the post office is closed.” Conley said once they put the grand opening sign in the window, people have already come into the town hall to buy stamps and drop off their mail. “I believe it’s going to be a great success,” she said. Lagro in Wabash County will open its location at Lagro Town Hall, 230 Buchanan St., at noon Friday. A one-hour open house will follow the opening at each location. Lagro Town Hall is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. Both communities had hours at their traditional post offices cut to four hours a day in the mornings, the statement said. By using the town halls, residents of both Silver Lake and Lagro can buy stamps and drop off mail during the afternoons. Last year, the postal service introduced village post offices as alternatives for postal retailing, especially in rural communities. The locations in Silver Lake and Lagro are the 23rd and 24th in Indiana – and the first two located in town halls, according to the release.
