SILVER LAKE -ÊSilver Lake Town Council Tuesday approved taking measures to improve the town appearance and street conditions.
A clean-up day to rid the town of trash-cluttered yards was set for May 22. The date was chosen so the town is in its best condition for Silver Lake Days June 18 -20.
A citizen attending the meeting interrupted the board's discussion of clean-up day and accused them of being in violation of Indiana's Open Door Law. The law requires all board meetings to be public with the exception of executive sessions for specific topics. The citizen was under the impression that the board met and set up the cleanup day in a private meeting.
Angie Glass, town clerk, informed the citizen there were no violations. The clean-up day is written into the town's trash pickup contract, which was approved earlier this year.
The town approved one major improvement and tabled another until next month. A $5,297.06 bid from Hohman & Son Excavating was accepted. The company soon will begin redoing a ditch on Pleasant Street, at the cemetery's west end.
A paving bid from Gaunt & Sons was tabled until next month when one section of the bid package was deemed too expensive a quote.
Gaunt & Sons placed bids to pave a cul de sac at Neher Drive, an alley and parking lot behind Memory Park and Hilltop Lane.
All the bids were thought reasonable except the quote for the cul de sac.
"We feel the quote is a little high on the cul de sac because it's just a little half-circle," councilman Ron Jones said of the more than $2,000 bid.
The original bid package came to $9,235.
In other business, the board:
Tabled a motion to donate $2,000 to the town's emergency medical service. Because tax draw dates are uncertain, council president Stan Williams said they will feel more comfortable assuring the EMS of a donation when they have their state money in the bank. The donation is written into the budget, so if the town gets the anticipated tax monies, they plan to follow through with the donation.
Approved two sewage bill adjustments. Kathy Wadkins and Carolyn Montel said they each had water leaks last month.
Silver Lake Town Council members are Stan Williams, president; Tom Waite and Ron Jones. Town clerk is Angie Glass.
