Silver Lake To Fix Iron Removal Unit

Posted

SILVER LAKE -ÊReplacing the leaking iron removal unit moved one more notch ahead Thursday at an extra town council meeting.

The council decided to install the system over three years to keep from draining too much money from the town budget all at once.

Don Morrison, of Ecologistics Limited, West Lafayette, estimated total replacement costs at $180,000.

The first year's costs are the steepest at $125,000. The price includes replacing the iron removal unit filter and its installation, piping, two system pumps and a building to house the unit.

The second and third years' costs are significantly lower, according to the report's estimates.

As first desired, the council told Morrison to bring as much work as possible to local contractors.

"We finally moved ahead," said Teresa Howell, clerk-treasurer, about the meeting's result.

The failing unit has grown steadily worse and was declared an emergency situation in December. According to Phil Shally, town superintendent, leaking water is audible when all the systems are turned off.

Silver Lake Town Council members are: president Brenda Wadkins, Gale Owens and Donna McCune, and clerk-treasurer is Teresa Howell. Phil Shally is town superintendent.
