Silver Lake To Consider Council Member's Out-Of-Town Residence

Posted

SILVER LAKE - Complaints have led to a public hearing on Silver Lake councilwoman Donna McCune's seat on the town council.

The hearing is set for 7 p.m. Monday in the town hall.

McCune has lived outside of North Manchester for the last six to eight weeks, she said.

At Monday's hearing, the council will determine what constitutes town residency and how to handle a potentially vacant seat. "Reside" will be the definitive word at the hearing, council president Brenda Wadkins said Tuesday at the town council's regular meeting.

McCune said she hit a "hardship" that shut off the electricity in her house at 506 E. Sycamore St. She expects to be back in her Silver Lake residence by Friday.

McCune's daughter still attends Silver Lake Elementary School, she said, defending her Silver Lake link.

In an unrelated matter, the town council will consider an ordinance to quiet tractor-trailers using their "Jake Brake" to slow down.

Dana Owens, wife of councilman Gale Owens, said the loud braking "jars the windows" in her house.

Town marshal Craig Hollopeter said the town would need an new ordinance to forbid it. He didn't think the issue would fall under the town's noise ordinance.

In other business, the town council:

• Tabled Silver Lake area resident W. Fleck, Jr.'s proposed permit to build a carport on his property 15 feet from the shoreline. The council has not set a minimum distance from the lakefront to build.

• Approved L.A.W. Son, Inc., Akron, to fix damaged sidewalks along Jefferson Street, costing $7,554. There was no start date.

• Approved fund cuts in unused money in the 2002 town budget to save for 2003, Wadkins said.

Silver Lake Town Council members present are: president Brenda Wadkins, Donna McCune, Gale Owens and clerk-treasurer Teresa Howell.
