SILVER LAKE - Silver Lake soon will have two new town trucks and a new computer for the police department.
Tuesday night at its regular meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council approved a motion to purchase two new trucks from Kerlin Motors. The combined price of the trucks, minus a $15,100 trade-in credit, totaled $61,768.16.
The town is in the process of applying for grants to cover most of the costs for the trucks, which will replace the two trucks the town currently owns.
The trucks that will be purchased are a Ford F350 regular cab pickup and a Ford F550 standard truck.
Bids also were received from Sorg South and Rice Ford, both of Warsaw.
The purchase of the computer for the police department was approved with a 3-0 vote. The current computer, which is more than six years old, is running out of memory and working very slowly.
The new computer will cost $775.
The council heard that town employees are doing everything they can to keep the sewers working properly despite massive amounts of water going through the system.
Town Superintendent Jasun Blocher said he believes there are sump pumps that are flowing directly into the sewer.
According to a town ordinance, sump pumps must pump water to the surface of the ground and then the water should find its way to the storm sewers from there. No pipes or hoses from sump pumps should be hooked into the sewer. Blocher said he will be trying to figure out where sump pumps are flowing into the sewer.
Violation of the ordinance can result in a fine if it is not corrected.
In other business, the council:
n Heard that Blocher has ordered backup generators for the town. One will arrive by Friday and the other two should be delivered in about two weeks as they are built to order.
n Heard that Spring Clean-Up Day will be April 25.
n Gave permission for Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter to apply for a COPS grant that would pay three years of salary for an additional town officer. The town must promise to retain the officer after the initial three years if they receive the grant.
n Approved sewer adjustments for Ralph Miller, David Oaks and Josephine Jaynes. A water adjustment also was approved for Jaynes. Each person had a water leak that now is fixed.
n Heard a letter was received from a resident complaining about the noise from the bar in town. Hollopeter will speak with the owner of the bar about the complaint.
