Silver Lake Teen Arrest Connected To Threat At ValleyA Silver Lake teen was arrested Tuesday morning after allegedly threatening to do harm at Tippecanoe Valley High School.
David Edward Helton, 18, of 4789 W. CR 950S, Silver Lake, was booked into the Kosciusko County?Jail at 1:51 a.m. Tuesday on a preliminary charge of disorderly conduct with a bond of $300.
At 9 p.m. Monday, the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department (FCSD) contacted the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) regarding a possible school safety concern, according to a KCSO news release. The FCSD deputies received information that a student posed a threat to do harm at the high school.
KCSO and Silver Lake Police Department officers went to Helton’s home to investigate the complaint. During the investigation, KCSO deputies contacted the county prosecutor’s office for assistance.
A determination was made to incarcerate Helton, a Valley student, on a preliminary charge of disorderly conduct, the release states. He was taken to the county jail and placed on a 48-hour prosecutorial hold. Formal charges from the prosecutor’s office are expected.
Kosciusko County Sheriff Kyle P. Dukes, KCSO deputies and Mentone Police Department personnel met with Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. (TVSC) administration at the beginning of the school day Tuesday, the release states. After detectives spoke with several students and parents, it was determined that the immediate threat was resolved.
Dukes said, “If you hear or see anything related to the safety of our school children, contact law enforcement and/or school officials immediately.”
TVSC issued a news release Tuesday afternoon. It said that at approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, TVSC received information from the KCSO about a possible school safety issue.
Due to the swift actions of the KCSO and cooperation with TVSC, at no time were students at risk during school hours, according to a news release from TVSC.
“TVSC, KCSO, FCSD and local law enforcement agencies are dedicated to the safety and wellbeing of our staff, students, and the community,” the release states. “We would like to thank all involved for their immediate actions to resolve this recent incident.”
