Silver Lake Spring Cleaning Scheduled

Posted

SILVER LAKE - Spring cleaning is coming to Silver Lake.

Tuesday night at the town council's regular meeting, dates were set for Silver Lake's Spring Cleanup Day and Tire Amnesty Day.

Silver Lake's town cleanup day will be either May 20 or May 27, depending on when Stafford Solid Waste can schedule trucks. The town council prefers May 20 because May 27 is during Memorial Day Weekend.

The town will transport a load of tires to be disposed of May 13. Since the tires are being transported on a Saturday, they need to be taken to a truck at the town hall May 12 between 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tires will be accepted but no rims will be allowed.

Town manager Phil Shalley informed the council that street sweeping is done and hydrant flushing is expected to be complete today. Town employees pick up loads of sticks and yard debris once a week, usually on Fridays. However, since this Friday is Good Friday, the loads will be picked up today or Thursday.

"Put them out, we'll pick them up," Shalley said. "It may be a day or two, but we'll get them. Leaves and twigs this time of year have to be bagged. If they're small, they need to be bagged."

In other business, the council:

• Tabled a motion regarding making improvements to the interior of the town hall. The walls currently have paneling glued to cement walls, but the paneling is falling down and the cement is crumbling off. The paneling will be removed and replaced with drywall. Also, the back door to the town hall must be changed to open out of the building instead of into it because it is a government building. The current door will be replaced with a stronger commercial door with a self-closing and self-locking mechanism.

The town received two quotes on the improvements, but the quotes did not list the grades and specific types of doors and hardware. Once the questions about the doors are answered, the council will vote on the bids. The vote is expected at the May meeting.

• Tabled a motion regarding the reversal of three one-way streets near the lake. Rager, Pearson and Shutt streets currently are one-way streets, but could be two-way if the motion is approved at the next meeting. Several town residents spoke against the change Tuesday night. The Silver Lake Conservation Association will hold a meeting Saturday where the proposal will be discussed. A vote from the town council is expected at the May meeting.

• Approved a motion to spend $3,000 to perform a smoke test on the sewer system. During heavy rains, large amounts of water are entering the sewer system, but the town does not know where the water is coming from. The smoke test, which will be performed by Fluid Waste Service of Fishers, is the only way to tell where the water is coming from. The extra water is causing unnecessary stress on the system and causing some part of the town to have sewer water back up into houses.

Silver Lake Town Council members are Stanley Williams, president; Tom Waite and Ronald Jones. Town clerk is Angie Glass.
