The Silver Lake Town Council approved a zoning change on Ind. 14, set the city clean-up day and approved health insurance for town employees at Tuesday’s meeting.
Dan Richards from Kosciusko Area Plan Commission spoke to the board about re-zoning a small grassy area on the south side of Main Street and west of High Street in Silver Lake.
Landowners Ryan and Erin Tucker asked to rezone the land from commercial to residential.
The Area Plan Commission gave a unanimous recommendation to the Silver Lake Town Council to approve the request.
The council approved the rezoning request.
Town Clerk Tonya Conley informed the board and public that the town clean-up day is May 19.
Stafford’s Solid Waste stipulates the size of the clean-up area be no more than six feet by six feet. Homeowners are not to put out tires or hazardous materials. They also need to put cat litter on the paint and if they have appliances to be picked up they need to be freon free and called about in advance.
The number for Stafford’s is 574-269-2492.
Council also heard insurance quotes from Chris Cotton of Hall and Marose Insurance. Cotton told members that if they kept all their insurance with Anthem they would pay more than they currently do. Cotton suggested unbundling the insurance for life insurance and dental insurance and use different carriers. By changing carriers the town could save $300 a month in insurance costs.
Cotton also told the council that they could add short-term disability insurance that would cover an employee who would get sick from non work-related circumstances for less than what their old insurance would be. The disability insurance would cover the employee up to $500 per week for up to 26 weeks. The yearly premium is $2040.
The council voted unanimously to accept the insurance quotes wihout the short-term disability insurance. Instead the council said they plan to self-insure their employees.
The council asked Conley to write an ordinance that would cover employees for 12 weeks at up to 45 percent of their salary.
The next meeting of the Silver Lake Town Council will be May 1, at 7 p.m. due to the primary election on May 8.
