SILVER LAKE - At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council voted against the Kosciusko County Area Planning Commission's recommendation to keep the 5-acre tract of land at Ind. 15 and Dixie Drive zoned residential.
By a 2-1 vote, with Councilwoman Jean Weller voting against, the Council voted to rezone the Silver Lake Wesleyan Church-owned land for commercial use. The Rev. Duane C. Seitz, Area Plan Director Dan Richard and Andrew Rossell, project manager and senior civil engineer at AR Engineering of Kalamazoo, Mich., were all present at the meeting.
During public comment, Rossell said he respectfully disagreed with the plan commission's recommendation and provided a site plan with specifics on the proposed Dollar General market store that would be housed on the property.
Richard reinforced the plan commission's earlier recommendation, by a 7-1 vote, to keep the property zoned residential. He told the Council that Rossell had not provided a site plan at the earlier hearing.
Local residents Carolyn Montel and Steve Behny spoke against the rezoning.
