SILVER LAKE — At Wednesday night's meeting, the Silver Lake Town Council accepted an Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) grant for the town's ongoing community center project.
The town will match 10% of the $20,000 grant, which will be used to hire an architect to design a community center.
Ahead of the regular meeting, the council held two public hearings, one for the 2024 budget and another for an additional appropriation. Tyler Coffel, of Baker Tilly, explained cash flows, receipts and disbursements for the 2024 budget.
Coffel said in 2024, 24% of property tax revenue is going toward public safety, 34% toward town operations, 41% toward streets and 1% toward parks.
Clerk-Treasurer Tonya Conley explained the additional appropriation for the police donation fund to account for computers and a thermal imager.
In other business:
• The council approved a $13,300 quote from Shankster Bros. for 90 vacuum sewer pits by the lake and a $2,812 quote for Calvin the caterpillar at the toddler area of Rambler Park and an alligator for Indian Trail.
• Town Marshal Jason McGlennen is applying for a grant to cover drug testing kits.
• Fire Chief John Conley asked for travel expenses to see a potential $120,000 fire truck for purchase in Kansas City. As previously approved, the town will provide up to $65,000 for a truck with the township providing the other half.
• Trick-or-treating hours will be 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31.
The council will next meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 8.
