Posted

SILVER LAKE - Silver Lake's new town park will soon have electricity, but the park is already being vandalized, town marshal Craig Hollopeter said Tuesday during the town council meeting.

The town council approved $377 to connect the wiring from the NIPSCO electric pole.

Ed French, Silver Lake, will do the work.

The council did not vote on French's $175 bid to wire lights into the park's gazebo.

About the vandalism, Hollopeter said someone has been defecating in the park between 4 and 5 a.m.

Police have a suspect vehicle and are looking for more information.

In another matter, the town council scheduled a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 with Ecologistics Limited, West Lafayette, senior environmental engineer, Donald V. Morrison. Last November, Morrison recommended Silver Lake replace the town's 34-year-old water filter.

He will update the council on the filter's replacement.

Also, Lake Area Association is searching for 2003 elected officers, nominating committee member Frances Head said. To date, they have no names. The association is looking for a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, she said.

In other business, the town council:

• Announced leaf pickup will be Mondays and Thursdays in Silver Lake and Tuesdays and Fridays for lake area residents.

• Decided trick or treat hours will be Oct. 31 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

• Will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 to address the closing of the alley north of Silver Lake Wesleyan Church. The council's next regular meeting will immediately follow the hearing.

• Opened a fund for police equipment.

• Approved $2,050 for a five-inch deck gun and flange adapter for the fire department's fire truck. The gun can shoot 1,250 gallons of water per minute.

• Approved $200 to fix the strobe lights on the fire truck.

• Approved $750 to buy two pagers for the volunteer firefighters.

• Approved $279 to buy two 65-pint dehumidifiers for the water plant.

Silver Lake Town Council members present were: Gale Owens, Donna McCune and clerk-treasurer Teresa Howell. Phil Shally is town superintendent. Craig Hollopeter is town marshal. President Brenda Wadkins was absent from Tuesday's meeting.
